Big Brother On The Mission
Field
When 21-year-old Paul went to bed
on the evening of February 10, 1994, he had no clue
that his freedom was about to end.
At 3:00 a.m. a smiling official from the
Chinese Public Security Bureau awakened him, demanding
his passport. The officers wanted to harass the small
group of Christians who were travelling through Henan
Province encouraging members of Chinese house churches.
Paul and six others, including Hong Kong pastor Dennis
Balcombe, were arrested.
"I felt a lot of grace from the Lord,"
Paul says of his four-day detention. "I wondered
what would come next, but I knew it wasn't anything
I couldn't take."
The group's arrest in China stirred waves
of publicity. Since their release, Balcombe has been
interviewed by the media and has addressed a U.S. Senate
panel and various foreign governments about religious
persecution in China.
Paul's interest in helping the Chinese
church was largely influenced by his parents, evangelists
Steve and Adria. Steve was ordained in 1989 at
Houston's Grace Church, a Chinese congregation. Since
meeting Balcombe in 1992, they have been to China
several times.
Paul's own call to the mission field crystallized
after he read a book about the underground Chinese church.
The testimonies of Christians who were persecuted during
45 years of communist rule touched him deeply.
Pledging to give his life to God's service,
he prayed, "Lord, make me kindling for the revival
fires."
His own experience of persecution in China
has only served to stir his love for the Chinese people
including the authorities who arrested him. At
home now in the United States, he says he's willing
to go wherever God directs. In October he ventured to
Haiti on a relief mission.
"I feel like there's so much work,
a harvest to be reaped," he says. "I'm not
interested in building a kingdom or anything of that
sort. I just want to see God's work done."
Being the oldest child in a large family
has been a big responsibility, Paul admits. But today,
as he considers other opportunities on the mission field,
he is thankful for the strong relationships and mutual
support of his brothers and sisters. He also appreciates
his parents for supplying him with the loving guidance
that led him into the ministry.
"The most important thing my parents
taught me is to fear God," Paul says. "That
means it doesn't matter who's watching, or where you
go or what you do. God is watching. He is with you and
will take care of you if you're obedient to Him." |

After returning from a 3-year stay in Asia, around
Christmas of 1996, Paul returned
to work at the TV station where Bro. Thomas started Jesus
Youth Invasion. "Through this ministry, we were able to
reach more than 5,000 people who called in on the prayer lines
to commit their lives to Christ. We connected many of
them with a local network of churches." Later in 1998,
Brother Thomas passed away and words came from the Lord for
Paul to launch out as an evangelist.

Bro. Eldred Thomas
(Now with the Lord)
During 1998-2002, Paul went on mission trips to Haiti and
led youth teams for Teen Mania to the Dominican Republic, and
HK/China. He was inspired by the testimony of Cassie
Bernal and Rachel Scott who were martyrs at Columbine for
Christ. In honor of their memory, he led a youth
ministry with the Children's activity center called Fired Up
Youth night, where many unsaved youth came to Christ in the
Gulfton area of Houston.
Paul was getting lonely and wondered when he would find his
wife. He prayed, "Lord, shorten the days." A few
months later, he decided to marry Laura.

Laura
Paul's wife, Laura is from Puebla, Mexico. She has a
BS in Communications and worked for a engineering firm for
several years in the States. She came to the US as a
missionary. We met through a friend who matched us up.
Paul said, "I found out she was into TV. That interested
me because I had worked in TV for Bro. Eldred Thomas."
In fact the week before I met her, a prayer counselor, Mary
Brown, at the station asked me to write down the traits I was
looking for. Years later she gave me the list and I
realized Laura fit it perfectly."
"We worked together in a youth ministry outreach for 4
years as friends. Just sort of 'Hi' and 'Bye.'
Finally Laura fasted for 7 days to ask the Lord to show me
that she was the one and later that year we decided to get
married."
"We were the youth and college pastors for a Taiwanese
church in Houston for a few years and finally felt led of the
Lord to end our time there, even as Abraham went out, not
knowing where he was going. We were wondering where to
go next or what to do. We wanted to be part of live and
active ministry and not just spending our lives working and
going to church as nominal believers. We remembered how
the Lord showed Abraham he would be the father of many
nations."
"The Lord showed us how to support ourselves with
businesses and use our spare time to minister to others and
help other ministries."

We now have two sons, Philip and Timothy.

We were told in a prophetic word given at a retreat in
Houston that Philip (means lover of horses) represents the
blessings that the Lord desires to give and

Timothy Riley (means "One who honors and fears God, by the
Rye fields--harvest fields of souls" John 4:35)
represents the disciples and the souls to be reached through the
ministry."
